DEPENDENCE
PASSAGES
Matthew 6:11
John 6:25-58
KEY VERSE
Psalm 127:1
“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.”
REFLECTION
Most of us live with this quiet pressure to do more. Be more. We fill our schedules, push through exhaustion, and convince ourselves that if we just grind a little harder, we’ll finally feel at peace. But in Psalm 127, Solomon, the man who built the temple and had more wisdom than anyone, says something surprising. He writes, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” He’s not saying effort doesn’t matter.
He’s saying effort without dependence is empty. You can wake up early, stay up late, out-hustle the guy next to you, but if God’s not in it, it won’t last. And maybe even more convicting, Solomon says that kind of life is fueled by “anxious toil.” That constant striving. The pressure to make things happen on your own. We’ve all tasted it. And if we’re honest, a lot of us are still eating it.
But Jesus offers us something different. When He taught His disciples to pray, one of the things He said was, “Give us this day our daily bread.” That’s a prayer of dependence. It’s a way of saying, “God, I trust You with what I need today. I’m not asking for a week’s worth. I’m not trying to stockpile enough so I don’t need you tomorrow. I’m just asking for enough for right now.”
And then, in John 6, Jesus says something even more radical. He tells the crowd, “I am the bread of life.” He’s not just saying He’ll provide for us. He’s saying He is the provision. He’s the only thing that satisfies. We’re surrounded by options that promise to fill us: success, attention, more control, a better body, more discipline. But none of those things can carry the weight we try to put on them. They’ll leave us burned out or puffed up, or
both. Only Jesus satisfies our deepest hunger.
So this is where dependence starts. It’s not passive. It’s not lazy. It’s intentional. It’s prayerful. It’s daily. We still train. We still build. We still work hard. But we don’t do it to earn security or identity. We do it from a place of rest. From a place of trust. Because God knows what we need. And He gives it, not all at once, but in daily portions. Just enough for today.
The question is, will we trust Him for that?
