DAY 4:
A LIVING SACRIFICE

PASSAGE

Ephesians 2:1-10

KEY VERSE

Romans 12:1-2
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...”

REFLECTION

Whenever Paul says “therefore,” it’s worth asking: what is the “therefore” there for? In Romans 12, it points back to the 11 chapters before, where Paul unpacks the mercy of God; how we were once dead in sin but are now alive in Christ, justified, forgiven, and adopted into God’s family. He makes the same point in Ephesians 2: “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins... but because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ” (vv. 1, 4–5). So when Paul urges us to “offer your bodies,” it’s not about earning God’s love. It’s about living differently because you already have it. Worship begins in view of God's mercy.

Sacrifices in the Old Testament were costly. Something valuable was laid on the altar to show God’s worthiness. Now Paul says your body is that sacrifice; not dead, but living. Worship isn’t just a Sunday activity. It’s your whole life, your energy, habits, desires, and strength, surrendered to God every day. A living sacrifice doesn't just die once. It keeps showing up. It takes daily surrender. Sometimes it looks like saying no when your
flesh wants yes. Sometimes it looks like discipline when comfort is easier. Sometimes it looks like resting when the world tells you to hustle. Worship is love expressed through obedience.

Paul then warns, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world.” The world says to use your body for your own glory, whether through indulgence, vanity, or the pursuit of comfort at all costs. But Paul urges us not to let culture set our form. Instead, be transformed by the renewing of your mind. The Holy Spirit reshapes us as we soak in God’s truth, remember His mercy, and surrender our lives to Him.

So what about the gym? Training your body can either conform you to the world’s pattern or be transformed into worship. If the goal is pride, attention, or image, it’s conformity. But if the goal is discipline, stewardship, and strength to serve, it can become worship. Every rep can be a prayer: “God, this strength is Yours. Use it.” Each choice to say no to gluttony, laziness, or vanity can be a way of saying, “I belong to You, not to this world.” This doesn’t mean working out makes you holy. But it does mean holiness reaches even the gym because worship is about giving God worth in every area of life.

PRAYER

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you’ve been conforming to the world’s patterns.
  • Pray for strength to crucify your flesh and joy to obey Him as you walk with Him.
  • Ask God how you can honor Him with your body this week in your rest, training, and discipline.
