DAY 2:
TRAINING FOR ETERNITY

PASSAGE

Daniel 1:1-20

KEY VERSE

1 Timothy 4:7-8
"...train yourself in godliness. For the training of the body has limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come."

REFLECTION

When Paul wrote to Timothy, he didn’t tell him to pursue comfort. He didn’t even say to pursue strength or success. He said, “train yourself in godliness.” That’s what he cared about. Godliness (or God-like-ness) and becoming more like Jesus. Learning to walk with God in such a way that it shaped everything else.

He follows this thought in verse 8 by reminding us that physical training is good and has value, but that value is limited. The progress in the gym, the strength, the looks, it all fades. But Godliness has eternal value. It doesn’t fade. It carries value in this life and in the one to come and that’s what we’re called to pursue.

Daniel understood this long before Paul wrote those words. When Daniel was offered the best food and wine from the king’s table, he had a choice to make. He could have blended in. He could have taken the easy route. But he had already decided in his heart that he wouldn’t defile himself. He wasn’t interested in compromise. He wanted to honor God, even in something as small as what he ate.

And because he did, God honored his obedience. Daniel and his friends looked healthier than everyone else. But more importantly, they were given wisdom, insight, and influence that only God could provide. Their faithfulness positioned them to be used by God in extraordinary ways. Godliness starts small. It’s built through decisions that seem ordinary and would likely go unnoticed by friends. When you choose integrity, say no to compromise, and honor God when it would be easier not to, God notices. Over time, those decisions form a life that God can use. That’s the kind of strength that matters most.

So the question isn’t just “Are you disciplined?” It’s “What is your discipline producing?” Is it helping you grow in godliness? Is it making you more like Christ? Because at the end of the day, godliness will outlast your performance, your routines, and even your body.

Train your body, yes. Be disciplined. But don’t lose sight of the greater goal. Let your discipline lead to godliness. And trust that God will use your obedience for something greater than you can see right now.

PRAYER

  • Ask God to expose where discipline has become about pride instead of Him.
  • Confess any areas of compromise you’ve let in.
  • Thank Him for the gift of your body and ask for wisdom to steward it well.
