KEY VERSE
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
REFLECTION
The phrase “your body is a temple” is often used to justify clean eating, gym selfies, and self-care, and while those things aren’t wrong, they fall short of what Paul really meant. In 1 Corinthians 6, Paul isn’t motivating the church in Corinth to get stronger or look impressive. He’s warning them. They were blending their new life in Christ with the old patterns of a culture steeped in immorality and idolatry. They were forgetting what it meant to be set apart, and Paul’s words cut right through the confusion:
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” (vv. 19–20)
Paul doesn’t say, “Your body is a temple, so treat it well,” rather, “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.” In Scripture, the temple wasn’t important because of how it looked but because of who lived there. Both the tabernacle and the temple in Jerusalem were set apart because God’s presence filled them. And now, by the power of Christ, your body is where God dwells. That’s not a metaphor or self-help language. The same Spirit who hovered over the waters in Genesis 1, filled the tabernacle in Exodus 40, and raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. Your body is His home and He makes your body holy. Because your body is holy, you don’t unite it with what is unholy. You don’t live like you’re your own, because you’re not. Paul says: “You were bought with a price.” This is the gospel. While we were still enslaved to sin, Christ gave His body over to death so ours could be made new. The price wasn’t silver or gold, but it was His very life. You were bought, fully paid for, and fully redeemed.
The next line, “you are not your own,” can sound heavy until you realize what it leads to: you are His. Romans 8 says we’re no longer slaves to the flesh but children of God. The Spirit we’ve received brings about adoption, so we can cry out, “Abba, Father.” (v. 15) You belong to Him, not just legally but relationally. You’re His child, His heir, covered in Christ’s righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). Your identity isn’t something you earn by how you treat your body. It’s something you receive by grace.
So what does that mean for you today? It means discipline is about stewardship, not appearance. Gluttony and sloth aren’t just bad habits, but they contradict the holiness God has placed in you. You don’t have to follow the culture’s obsession with body image, but you also don’t get to neglect your health and call it grace. How you steward your body is an act of worship; not to earn God’s love, but because you already have it.
If you’ve never trusted Jesus, this is an invitation to believe. You were created by God to be loved by Him and to love Him and those around you. Our choice to live by our own wisdom rather than God’s instruction brought us under the captivity of death. Because of His great love for us, God came to us in the person of Jesus. He defeated death to give you a new life. The moment you believe, you are a new creation. Your past is forgiven, your body becomes His temple, and His Holy Spirit lives in you. You don’t have to fix yourself first. You were bought at a price. Now He’s inviting you to live like it.
PRAYER
- Thank Jesus for paying the price to redeem you from the wages of your sin.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see your body for what it is: His dwelling place.
- Invite God to reveal habits or attitudes that don’t reflect His holiness.
